Abstract:

To better understand the interactions between river water and groundwater in the lower reaches of Malian River,a total amount of thirty samples were collected including river water and groundwater.Chemical analysis and numerical simulation were applied to understand the location and magnitude of river-groundwater interactions. The results show that Cl-concentration,TDS and EC in river water are higher than those in groundwater, and it descends along flow direction.Groundwater discharges to river mainly, the discharge rates and the total inflow are 0-4.66 m2/d and 1.65 m3/s,respectively.Affected by the lithology, the inflow varies spatially along river length with greater rates between R12 and R13 sample sites,as well as R14 and R15.While between R4 and R10,a weaker interaction is shown. The representation of the groundwater samples, the completeness of water balance items and sample resolution are shown to be of importance for evaluating groundwater inflows with environmental trace method. There will be a need for using multiply tracers approach, tributary investigation and monitoring and enhancing sample resolution to provide accurate estimation of groundwater inflows. The study can provide reference for the utilization of water resource.
